This summer, I'll be studying for, and taking, the bar exam. It is going to suck. Majorly. HOWEVER, after it is done, I'm planning a nice week-long vacation with the SO. One of the plans we have tossed around is going from San Francisco up the coast to Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver (3 cities I've never been too). She has already nixed sitting on the back of my motorcycle (I don't blame her, a 500cc bike is no Goldwing!), as well as accompanying me on her scooter (ditto a 160cc scoot!)
She was totally onboard, however, for renting a car; she doesn't want to add the mileage to her Jetta, and I don't...want to drive her Jetta. Does anybody know of a good place to rent a Miata for the trip? Or, alternatively, any Bay Area Jalops want to rent me their Miata for the week, in exchange for money and use of her Jetta?
Also, for every question I don't know on the bar exam, I plan on simply writing "Miata." That way, I'll at least partially be correct.

The sucky part about rentals is that you absolutely cannot get a manual transmission from the major companies.

Well, damn, that's obviously going to be a deal breaker. Might as well rent a Prius if you're going to get an automatic Miata!

This could be an opportunity! The First Opponaut to actually know what an automatic miata feels like

I wanted to rent a manual car to learn on before buying a car with a stick and couldn't find one from any of the big rental companies. Not even on the basest of base model ecoboxes that they had.

No, my dad bought one against my advisement. I would give the same advice to anyone: if you have a torque converter in a Miata, you made the wrong choice in the car (it was a really good deal, but still). Also, the flappy paddles are just a nuisance IMO

Just buy a decent NA for like 5k and sell it for the same money when you're done... Or just keep it ;)

Oh wow, It just spoils a lot of what makes the car great. Like, having a 2 door 3 row SUV

Lol that's not a bad idea! Prices for cars (and everything) are insane in SF, so if I went out to Sacremento to buy it, drove it for a week, then sold it in SF, I'd probably turn a profit!

Haha I'd say so. It's all about the perspective—for my dad's uses, it does the job, although it's not as fun as it should be. As a 'cute' or 'perky' or 'reliable' car, words you wouldn't hear someone using to describe their fun, nice weather car, it's great. From an objective standpoint, it's a good car and anyone would be fortunate to have it. It was also about $2k below market value (~$13k with 50k miles and 3 years old in GT trim), which made it an even more logical decision. But compared to a 2,200 pound 5spd NA, it just doesn't live up to the name or concept. For the record, my dad likes cars a good deal and many of his all-time favorites were within reach, which made the purchase so impulsive. Anything is fun, though, when a Sebring is the benchmark ;)

I dont know about Miatas, but given the number of Mustang convertibles crawling down the PCH, there must be hundreds of places to rent those (automatic of course).

I'm in San Jose! If you want to come check out the Super this summer (not drive up the coast, but a little test drive!) then you're welcome to do so.

Yeah totally. I may default to that, but goddamnit, that's so much lamer than a manual Miata! I'd rather not look like a midwestern tourist, as well. "Look honey, the Pacific Ocean! I've heard its even bigger than Lake Michigan!"

Not true. My bro got a Mustang GT with a V8 and a 6-speed from Hertz (he was shocked to say the least) earlier this year. It had 10K miles on it and the rears were almost toast. They were toast when he returned it...
